Chapter 17

Friday Morning

When Doreen woke the next morning, still nothing was clear in her brain. She lay in bed, pondering the tidbits of information as she knew them. Obviously that Celia woman from yesterday with her rude son believed firmly that nobody in her Farleigh family or in her in-law Bowman family had done anything wrong. Or Celia was keen to keep repeating the lies until even she couldn’t tell the truth from fiction.

Doreen needed to talk to Mack about it to make sure that he felt solid about whatever the case was and that he hadn’t done anything wrong either. She considered that and then picked up the phone and called him. She checked her watch as it rang and realized that maybe it was too early. She quickly hung up and winced.

“Great, Doreen,” she muttered. “You should have waited. The guy just got out of the hospital.” As it was, her phone rang back immediately, and it was Mack. “I’m sorry,” she cried out. “I didn’t mean to wake you.”

“You didn’t wake me. I was already on the phone with the captain.”

“Oh.” She waited, but, when he didn’t say anything, she asked, “Anything new?”

“No, nothing new. And apparently you’ve been sending off a volley of emails to everybody about making sure that I get protection.”

She went quiet. “And?”

He sighed. “I can take care of myself. Besides, they know how to take care of me too. You know that, right?”

“But I don’t know if they have the budget. I don’t know whether they think you’re a sitting duck or if they’ll just let you flounder on your own,” she snapped crossly. “So I had to make sure that they understood I wouldn’t be happy if they didn’t look after you.”

He snickered. “I think you got your point across.” He broke into big guffaws now. “I’m just not so sure that they appreciate your methodology.”

“Whatever.” She gave a wave of her hand. “They may not like it, but, if it got the job done, then that’s fine.”

“And what makes you think it got the job done?”

“I don’t,” she muttered, “but I’m hoping that somebody is looking after you.” At that came a voice in the background. “Is that Nick?”

“Yes, it’s Nick.”

“Do you realize, when I left the hospital, after finding out you had been released, that I had no idea where you even lived? You’re the one who’s always over at my house and always drinking my coffee,” she said, lowering the tone of her voice. “And I don’t even know where you live.”

There was a moment of silence on the other end. “Oh.”

“Yeah, oh.” She gave a loud sniff. “That’s all you have to say for yourself, huh?”

“What? Am I supposed to apologize or something?” he asked, a note of laughter in his voice.

“I mean, it is kind of an odd thing to realize all of a sudden that I don’t know anything about where you live, what your place looks like? You know there’s a lot of personality in a place where someone lives.
